SUGARLOAF and District Action Group and Holmesville Progress Association have proposed an upgraded war memorial for the local community.

The project would cost about $64,000.

Their aim is to secure funding from government and non-government organisations to complete the project before Anzac Day, April 25, next year.

West Wallsend is classified as a local heritage area and the new war memorial would complement the existing World War I memorial in the park near West Wallsend Workers Club.

The new memorial would commemorate those who served in all wars after World War I, especially those who gave their lives.

It would be a focus for Anzac and Remembrance days.

Lillian Price, from the progress association, and Anne Andrews, from the action group, have researched records to find additional names for the new monument and so far they have 290 names to be included of men and women from West Wallsend, Holmesville, Estelville, Killingworth, Barnsley, O'Donnelltown, Seahampton and the now defunct villages of Ladysmith and Mafeking.
