A MEMORIAL service will be held today to celebrate the life and achievements of former University of Newcastle scholar John Keats.

Emeritus Professor Keats, who died last month, was appointed foundation professor of psychology in 1965 and retained the position until he retired in 1986.

He held several positions at the university including dean of arts, dean of science and dean of mathematics.

He worked with his wife, Conjoint Professor Daphne Keats, in recent years in the area of cross-cultural psychology.

University chancellor Trevor Waring said Professor Keats would be remembered as a passionate academic.

"John made an enormous contribution to the university, in particular through supporting students and encouraging the pursuit of academic and research excellence," he said.

The service will be held in the Keats Reading Room, psychology building, at 11am.
